Honda Parts: All About Spare Tires

One of the Honda parts you might not think about often is your spare tire, but it’s important to learn a bit about it before you actually need it. This is what the technicians at Pacific Honda think drivers should know before they get a flat.
Types of Spare Tires
There are actually a few different types of spare tires available. A common type is the mini spare, often referred to as a “donut.” It’s smaller and lighter than your current tire. Then there are two different types of full-size spare tires. One is lighter and has a shallow tread depth, making it a temporary option like the donut. Another is an exact match for your vehicle’s other four full-size tires.
When to Replace Spares
If you have a spare tire in your trunk, it will be fine for quite a while. A spare should be replaced if it’s been in your trunk longer than five years or if there are obvious signs of damage. Cracks in the sidewall, bulges, punctures, and any uneven tread wear can make a spare much less reliable when you need it.
Caring for a Spare
In addition to checking for damage, you should occasionally check the air pressure in your spare tire. It can lose some air just sitting there. Remember that donuts could require a different pressure level than your other tires, so check your owner’s manual or the tire itself for the correct psi.
Driving With a Spare
Generally, it’s suggested that you don’t drive very long on a spare tire. This is especially true if you have a donut spare, which should only be driven for a maximum of 50 miles. Other spares can travel farther, but you’ll want to replace your spare and the opposing tire as soon as possible.
