How Does a Hybrid Plug-In Work?

Just like any hybrid model, a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) uses a battery and electric motor to generate electric power for the wheels and engine. PHEVs are unique, however, because their batteries have a higher capacity, delivering more power so you can drive exclusively on electricity rather than gasoline. PHEVs let you switch to an electric-only driving mode that forces battery power if there is charge remaining.

What Range Can I Expect?

Depending on your model, you may be able to drive for up to 30 or 40 miles on electric power alone. That makes it easy to save on fuel consumption when driving your PHEV for shorter distances. With more electric charging bays available around the country, you can top off on your charge during trips to the grocery store or public parks.

Can I Recharge When Driving?

It’s easy to recharge a PHEV with regenerative braking, standard on modern plug-in hybrid models. Regenerative braking converts the friction created when applying the brakes from mechanical energy into electric power. That power then returns to the battery, letting you easily gain power just by driving normally.

While regenerative braking helps to recover power over short distances, to fully take advantage of a PHEV’s electric capabilities, plug-in charging is required.
