We’ve seen them so often, and for so long, that it’s easy to take them for granted. But the 2018 Honda Civic is an impressive car if you stop to think about it. Entire car companies have come and gone since the first Honda Civic rolled off the assembly line, and some of those early models are still stubbornly chugging along. Here’s the history of one of our favorite new Honda cars at Pacific Honda.
Honda Civic: The Early Years
The first Honda Civic was a coupe that debuted in July 1972. It was joined by a hatchback just a few months later. That first generation compact car laid the groundwork for all that would happen in subsequent decades. It was reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly, while also providing better room than other compacts of the time.
The second-generation car was even more successful, spawning sedan, wagon, and two different hatchback variants. Each generation built on the successes of the ones before, adding new innovations as they went. Four-wheel drive, new types of suspension, and much more would characterize the car, and that spirit of restless change would, in turn, epitomize the Honda brand.
The New Honda Civic
We could say much more about the early years of the Honda Civic and how we got to this point, but it’s hard condensing a near half-century into a single page. So let’s turn our attention to the present and the 2018 Honda Civic.
The 2018 Honda Civic looks different from anything that’s come before it. The hood ornament’s the same, granted, but the lines are different. The hatchback has an aggressive and near-futuristic look, while even the sedan and coupe draw inspiration more from fastback styling than the usual staid sense of style that informs so much of the competition.
This year also sees a new spin on some old names. The coupe, sedan, and hatchback are joined by the Honda Civic Type R (previously available overseas) and the Honda Civic Si (long a legend in its own right).
Buying a Honda Civic at Pacific Honda
Every year, one of the world’s best cars just keeps getting better, bucking trends of falling car sales and setting a high bar for the rest of the industry. It’s not as rare as some other classic cars, but make no mistake: the Honda Civic — in any year — is certainly a classic in its own right.
