About the car Allowance Rebate System (CARS)

Recently, the United States House and Senate passed a bill called the Customer Assistance to Recycle and Save program (or CARS). The Customer Assistance to Recycle and Save program (commonly referred to as Cash for Clunkers, or the Car Allowance Rebate System), which will be available at registered dealers later this summer, will provide U.S. Government vouchers valued from $3,500 to $4,500 when you trade-in an eligible vehicle and purchase a new one before November 1, 2009 that meets or exceeds specified fuel economy improvement standards.

Program details including participating dealers, specific fuel-efficiency criteria and other guidelines will be provided by the National Highway Traffic & Safety Administration (NHTSA) shortly.
